O the moon shone bright on Mrs. Porter
~
this country
has always been
a destination
I cannot speak
for the indigenous
but
for the rest . . .
a destination
from the convicts and
their soldier guards
of old england
to
the multinational grubbers
and desecrators
of the goldrushes
the escapees
from war . . .
from communism . . .
refugees
invitees
the country –
australia –
is everyone
that is . . .
it was
now
not so much
now
it is offshore processing
guilty
until proven . . .
no
just guilty
really
of something
everyone seeking entry
to the country
is guilty
of something
oh well
we are less
than we were
but
for those of us who are
australian –
no matter where
we started –
we remain
the lucky ones
except
you are wondering
now
aren’t you?
what exception
has this miserable pedant
found
to pick at
like a weeping scab
well
it is just that
if you are
an australian
god knows
the sun shines
upon you
but
if you are not
within
australia’s gentle embrace
now –
as in
right now –
well
with the pandemic
and
not enough
vaccine
and
our fear
of what you might bring . . .
we’re sorry
but
if you are stuck
somewhere else
you can’t come home
and
if you live
in a place
away from here
you can’t go
back
good luck
wherever in the world
you are
and don’t forget
you are australian
god
shines benevolence
down
upon you

Stuck, indeed. Two of my uncles brought their families over after WW2. One cousin never settled and spent some years going back and forth.

Folk with a foot in more than one country are in a bad position at present. I feel for them.

A most interesting poem, Frank. Not a bad idea to close the borders, it keeps people safe … the ones that want to be there.

True, Robbie. The messaging from this government has been appalling though. It all comes out as punitive. None of it as supportive.
Very difficult for them to achieve any level of trust in the broader community, anymore, regardless of merits of argument.
The feeling generally is that they don’t know what they’re doing and just swinging blindly, hoping to score some points somewhere.

This would have to be one of my favourites Frank I can relate to it. I have always felt that for me Mother Scotland sent me to something better all she could offer me was the scenery, Mother Australia offered me much more and your poem reminds me of this and it speaks to my heart. Surely I can’t be the only one of your readers to feel this way.

I’m glad, Claire.
The whole issue of migration is one worthy of a lot of contemplation, and is the subject of the following piece. For what it’s worth (not much, I suspect0.
