all right all right
the leader said
all those of you
who do not know
the way
make a line
make a line there
make a line
come up close
come up close
come up closer
take a tail
in your mouth
but do not bite it
I said
a tail in your mouth
but no
no biting
now first rank
you may proceed
second rank
you may proceed
third rank
oh no
who dropped their tail
fourth rank
oh no
oh no oh no
in the chaos
of half liz-
seeking their tails
running over everybody else’s
and the wriggling
un-control
of discarded rears
the leader
when out of the assembly’s gaze
slipped beneath
a convenient stone
pressed his nose
close up
to his own tail
and sought again
for his dream

Poem #30: interpreting signals
Un-successful
I like how you’ve transcribed the details in the circumstances in trying to decipher the lizard’s behaviours! Kind of has an Escher feel to it – but words, clearly. 🙂

I had such a lovely time watching a group of small skinks running around on our back verandah – probably a female was involved, but it was a delight.
Cheers,
Frank

I had to stop and reread “skinks” – now that’s a word new to me …. quick search and I breathed a sigh of relief …. because here, it would be more likely to be “skunks” – and if they were that close, well, granted they only will spray if truly threatened, one can never be too careful! LOL
It’s amazing what the world’s creatures will do – I find it an endless source of fascination and wonder – makes for interesting “human imaginings” ….. 😀

You have a hat trick from me three likes in one day!!! It is so strange how different people interpret someone’s writing, I read it from the title as if it was about Noah’s Ark, with the animals lining up two by two. Strange eh!

Hi Elaine. Thank you for reading the piece. I think that’s not a bad comparison, actually. Glad you enjoyed the piece.
