diving in the petrified sea

the doctors donned their diving bells
and stethoscopes
probed the wreck
finger-tapped for echoes

they fossicked through the slurried dregs
of his old battlefield
found nothing but absent sounds
deep down
in the hard-lung forest
of no-man’s air

while we watched the old man drowning
one shallow breath
at a time
