remaining in dnipro (and mykolaiv and cherkasy)

we thought
we would be safer
in dnipro

better –
somehow –
if we were with
our family

we would go
crazy
otherwise

so
even though
the invasion
could be
anytime

we left australia
and came back
to home

~

my mother
is old

how
could I leave her
alone
through all this

I stay
though the missiles
are falling

in mykolaiv
we speak
only ukrainian
now

not long ago
some
spoke russian

it is something –
a small
something –
that brings
me
a little hope

we have each other
through this hardship

~

a young man
and his granddad
are making
canned meat

for refugees
and
for soldiers

sometimes
they also
make camouflage nets
or
fill sandbags

they defend
by helping
each other

and
by remaining
