faded (the stars away)

Who are those hooded hordes swarming
Over endless plains

I ate the moon
last night

right down
to the rind

then skimmed
a star
on fire
across the sky

it was the stars

eaten by
the eastern sky

by one
it claimed them

a wave of light
snuffing out
the night time

and yet . . .

and yet
there was no

no celestial spillage
of the ichor

but still
they died
those spectral birds
from the sky
by a brighter tide

and I never knew
their names

they were . . .

they were friends
passing by
on the same road
every night

and last night –
this dawning –
I watched them
to day
