listen (hope sings)

If there were only water amongst the rock

~

there is hope
in the song
of a blackbird

common bird
with a
so common
name

at first light
and
at last

he sings

it is a song
of spring
and
of summer

of water running –
available
plentiful –
to drink

but
in the day
as the sun climbs . . .

he is silent

hidden
beneath a shrub
or
in a thicket

everything wilts
under too much
scrutiny

and the harsh light
of the beating sun
blinds
and burns

everything wilts

the best of us
go a little
mad

do crazy things

we itch

we scratch

but
in the evening
and
at dawn
the blackbird
sings

restores us

enough to allow
a recovery
through the long
night

enough
to maintain a scrap
of dignity
through the revealing day
that is to come

he sings
and we
stop

listen

hope

~
