jobbing dancing (moving free)

school
was never any good
for me

I had to leave

so
when I was still
fifteen
I left

I worked
then
at mrs palotta’s
millinery shop
in the centreway

that was
my first job
and
I was learning things
that were important

hats
are important

and mrs palotta
and the staff . . .

they were
wonderful

I thought they were
the most important people
in the world

my friend there –
the senior milliner –

she took me
one day
to the palais

you know
the Palais de Dance

and I was hooked

I learned a lot
with miss lillias
but jazz . . .

jazz was something
more

something free

and I met people
there

so many interesting people

it wasn’t long
before I was jumping out
of my bedroom window
to meet up
with my friend
and go
dancing

my friend introduced me
to leslie
at the palais

he liked the way
I moved
