The Elyne Mitchell Photo Story Award

I rarely enter poetry competitions anymore. Occasionally I am tempted to try my hand at book awards or other literary honors because it is necessary to dip a finger into the water from time to time. For the most part, I keep my head down and concentrate on writing and developing my work in my own particular ways.

A little while ago – actually quite a long while, now, due to the intervention of the Coronavirus – one of the organisers of the iconic Man From Snowy River Bush Festival alerted me to a competition they were planning to hold that combined writing and photography.

At that time I was starting to engage in what I now describe as ‘picture poetry’ and was in the middle of writing a series featuring a local flock of pigeons as my inspiration for some quasi-meditative verse. The whole business of writing to images was on my mind, so I entered and then promptly forgot that I’d done so.

Today was nice!
