Ich Liebe Dich – a memory

As you mist likely know, I’ve started the job of putting all of my archive of poetry into book form. As I go along I’m encountering some wonderful memories and moments from the past.

Some years ago my Uncle Nic and his lovely partner came to Australia, from Germany, for a visit. This poem is my memory of the visit.

Ich Liebe Dich

ich liebe dich

my uncle stopped his lady
in the middle of Melbourne
turned her around
till they were standing
with their faces close
and held her

he just said it
in a quiet voice and with a soft look
so she knew he meant it
and there was a smile
creasing the corners of her eyes
while they went a little bit shiny
and moist

standing there for a couple of moments
I tried to make myself
and the rest of the street invisible
but I don’t think it really mattered much
to them
