riffing (on a greyhound): #1/7

My 4th anniversary on WordPress – 21/05/2020.
3k posts later . . .

~

to coolangatta

a journey begun
in night time’

mile upon mile
in the bus

head lolling
against a window

watch stars
as they wheel
around

until the fog
that comes of breathing
rises
like a mist
on the edge
of sight

and
grey by grey
each star is gone

~

there is no sleep
just
a shallow dreaming
in the hours
stretched
between small towns

a stop
among the sleeping sounds
of silence

change the driver

step down
for a pace
of cigarette

ten steps
along the sides
of the creaking hound

deep drags
to colour night air
in another shade
of grey

~

and at three ay-em
the lights play
across the ceiling

towns passed by

cars
approached

moving strips
and stripes
of pallid fire

reach a hand
in
drag it back

burned

~

the rocking movements
finally
become a lullaby

enough
at least
for a nuzzling dream
of rhythmic motions
and tactile dreams

change position

adjust
attire

do not wake
before the dream
is done

~

daylight
on the other side
of dawn
is a café

suddenly filled
with the murmuring
of a stumbling
half-woken
exodus

café coffee
café buffalo wings

café pee
on a disinfectant tablet
against a stainless urinal
and a rusted streak

~

splash
splash the face
to freshen

cold water gargle
and a basin spit

another cigarette
then
find the posture
that brings back
the shape
of an unyielding seat

the driver winks
at the lady
behind the counter

then
back
on the road

then
back on the road

~

true sleep this time
in a gleam
of morning

true dreamed
into a stupor state

let the hours pass
let the day do
what it must

don’t wake me
up
till coolangatta comes
