ganache and old candles (and zoom)

she said:

it was a birthday

an eighteenth
birthday
but
I couldn’t buy flour
anywhere
to bake a cake

just the week before
I had to hunt all over
for icing

but no
I made a ganache instead

cream
for the whipping
was found

somehow
from somewhere
and we dredged
some pre-loved
candles

it was special
I suppose
because
you only turn adult
the once

and there were her friends
the guests
all of them
lined up
across the screen
in row
upon row

no gifts
from the stores

non-essentials
are banned
so
it’s just us
in the room
and the best
we can do

her friends
everywhere

ganache
and old candles
and a session
on zoom

happy birthday
dear one

happy birthday
to you

maybe
in a year

a better year
we can do it
again

this time
to feel
real

  1. It is sad. A lad across the road from us had his 10th birthday yesterday, but at least we have a good street community here and there were lots of home-made posters up in windows wishing him a happy day. But not the same, no.
