a dusting of brown (turning into black)

I thought the smoke
that rose
from the fire
was enough

of and by itself
it took over
all our lives

breathing the death
of our forests
was

confronting

and I felt as low
as person
who holds
such things
in his heart
can feel

but
in a world of
one-off
astonishments
and dismay laid on

I should not
be surprised
there is always
one more thing

the topsoil
of new south wales
has risen up
to the sky

a cloud of dust
starts brown
then turns
to brown

turns itself
into billows

and day
into the black
of night

  1. i can’t imagine how terrifying it must be to be there. once this settles down (assuming it will) there needs to be a continent wide tree-planting effort. i know water is scarce but there have to be species that survive in low water

  2. A lot are still burning, despite good rain in the last 48 hours or so, Ruth.

The predictions are for hot and dangerous weather again in a couple of days. Meanwhile all the ash and refuse is washed into the rivers.

    Wait and see, I guess.
