I thought the smoke
that rose
from the fire
was enough
of and by itself
it took over
all our lives
breathing the death
of our forests
was
confronting
and I felt as low
as person
who holds
such things
in his heart
can feel
but
in a world of
one-off
astonishments
and dismay laid on
I should not
be surprised
there is always
one more thing
the topsoil
of new south wales
has risen up
to the sky
a cloud of dust
starts brown
then turns
to brown
turns itself
into billows
and day
into the black
of night
~
From the News: a haboob dust storm in new south wales

Thank you. Wild nature doing as she will. I fear we may have caused offense . . .

i can’t imagine how terrifying it must be to be there. once this settles down (assuming it will) there needs to be a continent wide tree-planting effort. i know water is scarce but there have to be species that survive in low water

Yes, continent wide healing of some sort. You’re right, I think.

Very stark and real. Terrifying.

It very much feels like the surreal has become the norm, Ruth.

Is there any glimmer of hope?

Not as I see it, Ruth. There is lots of individual goodwill and desire for change, but it is unlikely that there will be any political willingness to do whatever it takes.
My outlook on the future is black and bleak.

I hear you. Are the current fires still out of control?

A lot are still burning, despite good rain in the last 48 hours or so, Ruth.
The predictions are for hot and dangerous weather again in a couple of days. Meanwhile all the ash and refuse is washed into the rivers.
Wait and see, I guess.

It’s good that you’ve had some rain, but it sounds as though you’re now in for trouble of a different kind. I can see why your outlook is so bleak.

Today is a beautiful day. Lovely temperature, cloudless blue, just after rain.
3/4 of the State have a Total Fire Ban and we’re told to be watchful and wary . . .
So it goes.
