listen to (the reddest and most silent)

on the smokiest
day

beneath the reddest
sun

I sing
a canary song

listen
to me
sing

I trill it
aloud
so you can hear

then
I draw another breath

take it deep
inside myself

change it
transform it
so that
your ears might hear

have you
the ears
to hear me
as my voice
grows quiet and still

holds no
power

no
no power no more

but it sounds
in just the way
that silence
should sound

and I ask again

I ask you
one more time

do you have the ears
to hear me when
no song of mine
remains

just a smoke filled day
hiding beneath
the reddest sun
I have ever seen

perhaps
has ever been

perhaps
you still need
to listen
