watching the gold

Inspired by the phrase ‘And seeing that it was a soft October night’ taken from ‘The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock’ by T. S. Eliot.
This now comprises a part of The Linkages Project

while the sun
takes time
to settle

and this being
such a soft night
for october

shall we walk
just
you and I

on the trail
up
to the vineyard

we can watch
to westward
as the changing light
turns the leaves
into
a kind of
gold

like the grape
becomes
a wine
it will be
a sensual thing

almost
I would like
to touch the leaves

to feel the gold

if we go
now
the sun
will take its time
to settle down

we can watch
the gold

  1. That’s very lovely, Frank. And since you’re talking vineyards, and The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock, the devil in me wants to write a poem about getting drunk and then resembling ‘a patient etherised upon a table’. There, I’ve said it, now.
