The New Asylum – saturday morning at the psychiatric hostel

This is another poem originally written as part of the material that ended up becoming The New Asylum. This poem was not included in the final cut for the book.The setting is a non-acute hostel/rehabilitation unit.

saturday morning at the psychiatric hostel

a (in unit one) has gone out on a bike ride b just lit his twenty-third cigarette unit two (that’s c and d) are watching tv in a dark room blackened against the sun e has gone on leave away north to mildura rang to say he’s out of money might be back home soon f (in three) is being visited by hubby and the kids going shopping but only to gaze from window to window part g is banging drumsticks through the doorway of number four straight out at the people next door and h is me in five dishing out the pills and fielding calls from angry neighbours
