red and pink the blossom

Inspired by the phrase ‘That the pyrus japonica should be cut back and rounded’, from the poem ‘Madonna of the Evening Flowers’ written by Amy Lowell.

This now comprises a part of The Linkages Project

I broke
a branch
off the japonica

I have always thought
the red
quite beautiful

I find
specimens
in odd corners
of strange gardens
that I pass by
on the street

not cut back
or rounded

but growing wild

a little
unkempt

I take a branch
work
to and fro
to break it

red blossoms in my hand
a picture

and from
another place
another
ignored backyard tangle
there is an abandoned peach

a prettiness
of petals
and stamens

I bring them home
and hope
that you will know
what I was thinking

when I chose
each branch of blossoms
for you
