Inspired by the phrase ‘Let us go then, you and I’ taken from ‘The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock’ by T. S. Eliot. This now comprises a part of The Linkages Project |
would you walk
the day is
un-inviting
sending messages
that tell
of better things
indoors
the rain
is a drizzle
unabated
since the middle . . .
yes
the very middle
of the night
but
if we must
and
if you would
well . . .
a moment
I will retrieve
my hat and coat
my gloves
and boots
so
shall we sombre
along the path
endeavouring
that our feet
remain quite dry
or will we
as children
splash and clamber
sedately
ignoring the sagging damp
that jewels our hats
or shouting
puffs of air
as smoke
that we are breathing
all right
come along now
I am ready
let us start
at least
with hand in hand
and ready
to catch one drop
each
on outstretched tongues
a laugh
at the beginning
of this
our sojourn
in rain

I think this couple started out as older and by the end catching rain on their tongues they had shed at least 30 years. Lovely poem Frank.

A promising ending after a reluctant start, I think. Glad you enjoyed it Anne. Thank you.

Frank, like your poem. Here is my response in haiku/senryu, inspired by the reading:
JOY OF OUTDOOR
perfume from the dress
gossip choke the smoky room
too digress indoor
drizzle since midnight
fun to stroll and play outdoor
with boots and raincoats
hand-in-hand we laugh
re-live age of innocence
joy of splashing rain
