existentiality (as startled in the night)

Inspired by the phrase ‘the soot that falls from chimneys’ taken from ‘The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock’ by T. S. Eliot.

This now comprises a part of The Linkages Project

the startle
in the night was
this time
caused by a sound

it woke me

left me wondering
at the source

internal . . .

external . . .

or without

it is a still night
and there is no disguise
from the passing wind

a trickle
of sound
as of rain made fine
but solid
has played patter pit

has woken me

a slight startle
but bringing a sense
an omen
of intrusion
from beyond the spaces
that I can control
and manage

I examine my heart

to update its status

whether new harm
has befallen

am I in love
or still in abstentia

aloof from beauty and wile
from desire
and need

startled but
as yet

it beats strongly still

I am reassured
as every lub
is followed by its partner

and the situation
is no more
than the soot
that falls from chimneys

is not yet
in its nature
