A Book Cover a day for seven days (Day 3). The Wedding Party – H. E. Bates

Day 3

I’ve been tagged by Mick Canning to choose and feature 7 book covers in 7 days. The covers of books that mean something special to me. This entry is for my Day 3 cover.

H. E. Bates was a wonderful writer of short fiction. He wrote during and after the Second World War and his work – whether humorous or sombre, was tinged with a bitter-sweet melancholy that appealed to me enormously and was very influential with me when I was teaching myself to write and seeking to establish my own voice.

Among other works, Bates is responsible for great characters such as ‘Pop Larkin’ in the Darling Buds of May series of 4 books. His ‘Uncle Silas’ was an old reprobate who was a joy to encounter among the short stories.

You’ll find his work around still, I think, though most of mine came from Jumble sales and Second Hand bookshops.

Look him up. I think he’s worth a reading, still.

Would you like to be notified about changes and developments in my writing world, like new poetry collections and giveaways?

Success! You're on the list.
