who lived
inside
these walls

in another time
was it me

that
what is now
so many
fallen rafters
was a space
in which
I roamed

a desk
in the corner
where my son dreamed
himself
into sweet novels

he would write
as long as
there was
paper

above
there
in the bedroom

I loved my wife
so much
you know

and I wonder
sometimes
if I showed her
when I
yet could

at the back
below the collapsed
upper floor

we ate
at one time
around the kitchen table

we joked
with each other
in a serious way
that only she
and I
ever understood

and scraps
we gave

chook chook chook

to the fowls
for the eggs
and meat
they gave us

while they lived

while
we lived

when these
were walls
and within
we lived
