all our lives
taken together
were meant
to mean
something

here
on a stretcher
laid down
in the calcifying mud

I am not so certain
anymore
that I know
where the meaning
resides

I thought
once
of glory

I was filled
with the idea
and pride

but I saw
the passing
of my best mate
was nothing . . .

meant nothing

a small pool
of blood

a last gasp
of air

my enemy
will carry me

we will both
be glad
we are out

away
from it

he is just
a man
in the end

and I have had moments
to wonder

just what
am I

ah well
