memories of bathing

he takes off
his shoes
socks
pants
and his shirt

naked is the way
to go forward
from here

he has tried
to use clothing
to cover him over

to attempt the concealment
of what stands
self-condemned

but he is only
one man
whose shames
are just the small sins

of deeds he has done
and ought-to’s
somehow forgotten

one foot
into the water
begins
dissolution

every hard resolve
he has committed himself to
melts
in this way

into the water
out of the shell

old memories
that wash over him
absolve

~

Poem #505 from a series of poems drawn from the imagination and collected as: a Bachelard reverie.
