I saw him
sitting
on the post office
step
day release
from the nursing home
escape
is three times
around the block
in his trusty old steed
the silver mazda
waiting for a disabled person
parking bay
to become available
within gasping distance
of the lotto shop
where it’s a quick-pick
ticket
that is sure to win
the truckload
as advertised
on TV
what will you do
if you win …
when you win
so much cash …
he doesn’t know
what he might do with it
he isn’t in it
for that
just wants
to feel as though
he’s still alive
and has a chance
to win
a chance to breathe
participating
in the post office step
day release scheme
and away
from the nursing home
~
Please, help me never to be in that situation!!!

Cheers Derrick. My dear old dad, tearing up the town as I was on my way home from work.

Thank you Tom. The problem with a long life is when you have run out of meaning to fill it with, I suspect.
