the demanding nature of a tree

all through the night
his sleep
disrupted

images of art

he saw the hand
wielding pencils
across white
to draw a tree

rising up
from the page

opening its leaves

swaying slightly
to a breeze
ruffling
across the paper

the hand
reaching in among the branches
to sketch a bird
.
.
.
.
detaching

one
then two
then
three

leaves to fly
for an autumn comes
and a tree
drawn well
responds

all through the long
and disrupted
night

until new morning
when he rose

walked at once
to his drawing board
to seize a charcoal
and began

  1. Love this, it resonates with me too. I’m a great believer in the power of the unconscious to provide inspiration. Do like that image of the tree lifting off the page and into vivid motion. This is such a visual poem.
