stolen moon

I stole the moon tonight

it wasn’t doing any harm
nor some special good
I saw a chance
and took it

with both my hands
then away
under my jacket

the sky
still seems full of stars
and I couldn’t even claim
that it’s become more dark
not so light
not the way it was

I can’t explain
what happened inside my head
it was an impulse
a fiendish clever moment
I went mad for a heartbeat
maybe two

when I realised
what I’d done
I was halfway home
with no way back
and now
I haven’t a clue where to put it
don’t know
what I ought to do

because tonight to my surprise
without a warning
I reached out
and stole away
the moon

  1. This is extraordinarily good. Love it. Content, rhythm, touch of rhyme, original, picturesque. Would be a great activity use your poem with my g-grandchildren for story and picture time. Happened upon you via Word of the Day. 😀

    • Thank you Oneta. I’m delighted you came across the piece and found my site. There’s probably a lot of stuff kids can enjoy in the archives, though I don’t especially write for young folk. Hope you enjoy what you see.
