searching for red (the tomato picker)

tomato (2)

he bends
from the waist

ruffling the leaves

searching
for red

colour
by eye

softness
by a touch

and a squeeze

orange abounds

there’s yellow there
too

tu-tu-tu

tu

roll
into the pail

as baubles
of shine

a sheen
from the sun

into the pail
then
he straightens
to stretch
the pain of the bend

the stiffness
of reds
hidden
by greens

staining his hands

an olfactory anesthesia

as he selects
those that will leap
to hand
from the stalk

once again

a ruffle of leaves

in the search
for a red
