salutation

every evening

magpies

as the sun descends
and the darker shades
assert themselves

magpies
launch
from their perching points
on fence post

or the crown
of a tree

into a flapping
be-gangled
flutter

rising gradually

as high
as they can clamber
up the air

a draggling ascent
of neck stretched
and beak aimed
to the sky

until

a pivot point
brings beaks to tilt
towards ground

and the soar
begins

elegant

wings outstretched
remige tips
curved up
ruffling
against the wind

and nothing
could look finer
than a single
or
a pair

when they have passed
the pivot

in silhouette
gliding to ground

before

aflutter again

rising
in their evening
salutation
