of a battle in byzantium

I am reading of anzacs
in half remembered wars
and forlorn places

the old dardanelles
asia minor
byzantine ottomans

empires come and go
and old forts spout flowers
where the guns used to be

clear blue waters
hold captive
ghosts in ships
mired where they sank

hallow the ground
poppy the headstones
honour the fallen
on that one day each year

but still
they stay fallen
still dead and gone
and still
it is certain
there are more
yet to come
