the sound of planes diving

sound is deceptive

he thought the saws
and sanders

the hammer blows

originated up the hill
where the old woodworker
whiled his hours
on small constructions

turned objects
on the lathe

edges shaved
from swollen doors

but no

the sound
was an electric plane
dive bombing
an unsuspecting length
of hardwood

there are modifications in train
on a nearby dwelling
somewhere behind

is deceptive

for a short time
it seemed the war
had come close
