Poem #10 from: A Lizard Life
Back to A Lizard Life – Introduction
when he dons the mask
he is The Lizard
scincidaen snout
raised to the air
a walk that is both sway
and saunter
feels his way by the taste
of honeyed sun
head up head up
he is so lizard proud
so
lizard sure
but in the hole
again
the empty tunnel
when the dark has closed
is an end to games
there is nothing now
but mask
to claim last certainties
as the long night falls
while shivers seem
so very much
too near
he aches
through hungry hours
for the light of another
holy day

They do all right, I think.

I just cannot find a sense of compassion for your lizards. Trying my best to be somewhat kind. They may do all right, but they are not always all right with me!
