conquering heroes

Poem #1 from: A Lizard Life

Back to A Lizard Life – Introduction

ack ark………………..ark ack

ark ack……………….ack ark

for months we have been
alternately entertained
and irritated
by the endless rearing
of magpie chicks

squaw………………..squaw
……….squaw-squaw………………..squuaw-squaw

squawking for parental attention

petulant and sulky
lost and disarranged
demanding and self-entitled

the younger generation
have kept their elders
on their talons
and at their tasks

now
in high summer
they are adult
barely adult
stalking their home ground
in a gang of six or more

……….ack ark……………….ark ack

ark ack……………….ack ark

four in a square
they are organized

serially croaking

gradually progressing
to the far end of their territory

each in turn
stepping toward the centre
to croak and hurriedly offer a peck
before retreat to the periphery

in the centre
the subject of their unfriendly escort
our resident blue-tongue skink

who proceeds with a reptilian swagger
a monitor, lizard, crocodile
or even snake-like slithery swagger

it moves just fast enough
to dissuade its avian friends
from comfortably stepping nearer

eventually
with the lizard safely immersed
beneath a pile of rotting compost
the magpie gang

the back-yard conquering heroes

resume a strut
around their gratefully liberated territory
