reading to a familiar soft light

by the light
of the eyes
of his cat
he read the news

a complete infestation of rats
down town

a hazard
of climbing trees

some old mog
called eight
used to be known
as seven

his cat
blinked her eyes

he turned a page

sixteen games to play
for mouse
and for mouser

hackles raised –
a static storm

close encounters
with a feral

litter fine
(six kits)

his cat
looked up
into his eyes

he shied away

a soft light
a familiar
but still
too much revealed
