trench man #4: home before texture

he comes to know
the feel of clay

gets the taste
by smelling it

not a potter
but he slices
clean
and smooth
with the keen blade
of his shovel

so many strata
green
then dirt
to ochre-orange

brown
into death-white

a palette uncovered
before he meets the depth
he is aiming for

perhaps he should
while away a little time
by testing texture
in his hand

but no
there is just a metre
to go

always
there is another metre
to go
before home
