memorial park

Poem #47 from Small Town Kid

Back to Small Town Kid – Introduction

under the embrace
of warm night
the trees of memorial park
are majestic and imposing
in the darkness

ancient californian redwoods
bunya pines
and giant conifers
tower silently
as though waiting for us
to lie beneath them

on the soft grass
below the triumvirate
of children’s swings
and a monument
to those
who will never have
our chance

we can only gaze
between the disappearing
lines of trees
to the movement of clouds
above the silhouetted branches

breathless in excitement
awed by wonder
at words spoken
secrets revealed
and promises made
for tomorrow
