substantive

to be some-thing
he had to be something

for how could he be
if he was no-thing

how can nothing be

and what was he
and which was he

perhaps a place-mark
on the circle route
of a journey

passing through
and then return

searching the out-ward
scouring the in
for traces
of a substance
that was him
alone

  1. Still thinking about your words! But, I would say that no-one is no-thing. Unless…of course…some-thing gets out-ward and in-ward confused. One is more important than the other. Instead of re-turning, maybe he needs to start re-inventing. Good poem, Frank!
