sweet and bittered

and as I sow
among the fresh turned furrows
I have reclaimed
from weedy grasses

with my hand I guide the seed
along the line I’ve drawn
brush the soil back over
smooth the bed

how many beds
how many seasons
what yield
has risen from the ground

what love poured into sowing
was it enough

which seasons sweetened fruit
which bittered into wood
which beds so smooth and open
returned to paspalum and kikuyu
to grass

as I sow
among new furrows
I have drawn in the dirt by hand
I wonder which seed will rise
which fruit will sweeten
which year is this
in the garden

what will grow
