the hallway at saint joseph’s

Poem #16 from Small Town Kid

Back to Small Town Kid – Introduction

in the hallway at saint joseph’s
whooshing cane makes contact
with a naked calf

the sound lingers
inside memory
longer than the holding back
of smarting pain
gulping tears
and brave facades

longer than the raw red marks
etched in an early mind

good morning mother superior
will you correct the sins I’ve committed
I’m not sure what they are
but I guess you’re here to show me

I’m here to be educated

    • Woof! That’s fierce cruel. It’s almost impossible to comprehend, from this distance, what possessed them. At least, it was impossible to comprehend until the child sexual abuse allegations emerged. Ghastly.
