the ladder (part a) climbing

there is no light
there is no
gravity

there is only
up
and no way to know
which direction
that is

he holds to a rung
of the ladder

climbing
the darkness

maybe higher

pauses
one arm looped
around a stanchion
takes some nourishment
a little relief

he laughs
a small brittle sound

which way
does north lie

it was important
once
but now he might be east
or going west

god help him
even south
again

he thinks

well
you have to have
a chuckle
don’t you

even though
it sounds more like
a rasp of breath
fed through
a one-way valve

and he has to
hold on
lest he floats

a

w

a

y

he grabs a rung
pretends he knows where
north is
illuminated
on the map he holds
in his head

and he starts to climb
again

the sound
of his boots
on the step
rings hollow
