with a view to the sweet-grass

the walk up the track
into the forest
is a meditation of butterflies
and the unpredictable scent
of eucalyptus rising

the monarchs reign here
individuals in hundreds
courting sets of five
and six
twirling an indirect pursuit
of the would-be queen

a paddock of rolled hay
the scrub-wood valley
the rise of plantation conifers
thirty years dense

full green

and here
on the rise that is the end
of the walk
the lushest grasses grow

four tender stalks
to be carried back down the hill
then shredded
into dinner for the faithful one
who sniffs the view
at her mistress’s feet
each evening
