on peaceful streets

today
they found Anne Frank ‘s
pendant

after all these years
they’re still sifting
through the traces
of that old war
and its cremations

~

in Nigeria
they found a couple
of stolen schoolgirls

babies’at the breast

strange
how they have turned into women
their sisters
still out
in the wild somewhere

and who they are
is lost
in the clouds of

still
at war

~

another little boy
bloodied
dragged from bomb-rubble

Mosul
or Aleppo
I can’t even tell
they all look the same
another city another child
both broken

~

here at home
we have no war
but the refugee children
are setting up in gangs
riding the night
ram raiding in the day

hammers
machetes
guns

they have grown up
these war children
to re-teach the lessons
of kid-survivors everywhere
out on our
so-peaceful
streets

Poem #18: last

This for Michael and co’s efforts at the Poets for Peace collaboration.  Contribute, if you can, to the Renga. I confess, I was a syllable or two short with mine, but I don’t think it matters – express your thought.

Cheers,

Frank

    • Hey Christine. Thank you. Yes, we have a resurgence of gang formation going on over here – according to the press and the news, at least, and it seems that a good many disaffected young people, previously traumatised, are becoming involved. Hard to believe, when you consider the lavishness of the welcome extended to them …
