lagoon #23

sometimes
I find myself wondering
in absentia

what is happening
down there
at the water

did the last fall
of rain
make a difference

am I right
in my assumption
that it’s only a delay
in the inevitable

not in dreams
but
in imagery
I see moving lines
of high-water dampness

increasingly skeletal
bones
of old wood

trees long ago fallen

I watch in my mind
the proud
or desperate
thump of a fish-tail
breaking the surface

I wonder
what will be
the reality
of the next encounter
