the wind at war

A Poem a Day in October 2016: #22

the wind and the tree fought

a battle last night

usually skirmishes
blow up
shake some branches
then pause
until a truce is struck

but this time
the siege won through

for weeks there was rain
brought by the wind
to weaken resistance

the tree held its ground
shed a few leaves

then sometime after dark
last night
a new legion of rain
came in a gust
that determined the outcome

the silky oak is down
and battle is over

the wind has moved on
to seek favorable terms
with a forest

a lingering breeze
kisses the last silky seed
carries it away
like a promise
to rest in a place
where battle lies distant
