lagoon #7

there is no difficulty finding the fish
today
two are puddling in the shadows
on the near side of the lagoon

large fish
the line of them is clearly displayed

great mouths gaping
when they periodically rise
to kiss the air

I don’t know what kind they are
perhaps redfin or cod
more likely european carp

but I am in no hurry
and will know
soon enough

the trenching left by boys
on their bikes
three weeks ago
is now metres
from the edge of the water

it won’t be long
before the fish
are dry
and their identity established
beyond doubt
