lagoon #6

there is a duck
where the heron usually stands

I haven’t seen this particular quacker
since early in the spring
we caught a glimpse
of ducklings one day

but only the once

the rest is mystery

on the way back
a double take

where the duck was
is the heron

it’s not

a strange bird
white body
black head

perhaps the duck
has transmogrified itself

I finally spot her
further up the tree snag

there has been a dislocation
in my absence

sacred ibis
appear to rule

for tonight
at least
