too cool for (magpie) school

A Poem a Day in October 2016: #8

sharp black
sharp white
sharp beak
all right
sharp magpie

this magpie is too cool
for school

approaching a small mountain
of mulch
it’s important
to maintain an appearance
of control
while strolling up the hillside

the feet
however
are down below
and out of sight

so it’s a
shuffle-dance-shuffle
with one foot
to find firm balance
while attempting nonchalant

peck

peck

and another dance-dancing
two-step
followed by
no-no-no definitely not
a stumble
three paces backwards

peck

peck

this mound of dirt
is not worth it
ma-an

there’s better strutting
on new-cut lawn
for a dude
who’s so

sharp
