lagoon #2

we bought a new camera
today

it’s a pretty flashy unit
more snap than either of us
have ever owned before
and suddenly
the nature of our walks with Leelu
have changed

instead of charging off down the path
Looie is experiencing
stops and starts

a close up of some bark

point and shoot at a tangle
of tall branches

shepparton-grass-2

pallid blanching
of dry grass
prematurely gone to seed

we only have one lens today
and the dazzling whiteness of a heron
that repeatedly parks itself
on the rising trunk
of a tree long fallen
is too distant
to satisfy

the bird never seems to do more
than stand idly
patient above the water

heron-and-billabong

tomorrow
the second lens will be deployed

all that is distant
will seem near
