just wood in a year

the old plum
we thought might have died
a season ago
is almost gone

but it’s struggled on
to another crop
and there’s a big harvest
this year

we’ve picked ten pounds
of blood plums
a couple of the blue
and bucket-loads of yellow-gage
to dispose of

take out the stones
stew them in the pot
render
till they’re fit to sauce

or into bottles
then the fowlers
preserved whole
behind glass
to grace a cake
come the winter

and tick off
the list of our friends
for each
a container

no
two

in the season of plenty
it’s right to share
the fruit of our labour
and an old tree
that may be just dead wood
in a year
