just wood in a year

the old plum
we thought might have died
a season ago
is almost gone

but it’s struggled on
to another crop
and there’s a big harvest
this year

we’ve picked ten pounds
of blood plums
a couple of the blue
and bucket-loads of yellow-gage
to dispose of

take out the stones
stew them in the pot
till they’re fit to sauce

or into bottles
then the fowlers
preserved whole
behind glass
to grace a cake
come the winter

and tick off
the list of our friends
for each
a container

in the season of plenty
it’s right to share
the fruit of our labour
and an old tree
that may be just dead wood
in a year
