reserve one to Marysville

Poem #27 from the ‘Surviving the Devil’ collection (unpublished)

on TV
they’re in camouflage
floppy hats and war paint
there’s always one studying a map
then pointing forward
before the troop becomes visible
out of cleverly disguised places of concealment
that the camera never saw

join The Reserve
learn combat skills and leadership
in The Reserve we’ll show you
how to land a chopper
in the dark

the way to fire a gun

modern radio
we know how to talk to you
join The Reserve

all right listen up
don’t forget
this has been a battle-zone
and we’re here
straight after

this has been a shooting war
that’s left it’s char-marks
in rubble

so work forward slowly
house to house
and shed to shed
from fallen wall
to square of tin

any suspicious mound

take your time
engage all your senses
and be careful
what you disturb

get the dogs
if you’re not sure
they’re experts at this

if you’re the one
to find the reason we’re here
have a care

don’t touch anything
just call it in

that’s our job
