near and far

Back to: Surviving the Devil: A Song of Fire
Poem #20 from the ‘Surviving the Devil’ collection (unpublished)

you were listening to public radio
when the fires were at our door

tuning-in to urgent alerts
repeated each half hour

you could almost taste the smoke
that rose behind the Buckland Gap
up by Dederang
and Yackandandah

eventually you’d heard enough
got on the phone to call
just to hear our voices tell you
we’re okay

I’m listening to public radio
there’s an urgent alert for Musk and Vale
and Bullarto

I’m starting to go crazy
thinking about your fire
hearing everything they say
and knowing nothing at all

hold on a minute
just for a sec
I’m going to the phone

don’t move away
I’ll talk to you
in just a moment
