Kinglake still

Back to: Surviving the Devil: A Song of Fire
Poem #18 from the ‘Surviving the Devil’ collection (unpublished)

Kinglake is dead
spread out on the ground

streets to nowhere
flanked by blank allotments

Kinglake is in a twilight dream
holding on to itself

rows of tents
in temporary permanence
on football grounds
below the hills

Kinglake is on life support
breathing slow

in small steps
between guy ropes
to the laundry and the showers

Kinglake is rising
in the morning

going off to school with mum

full of plans to clear the block
of ash
and twisted memories

Kinglake is alive
and taking shape

a picture being drawn again
in a sketchbook
of the heart
